Why is Tuna so great for students?

Canned tuna is an excellent source of high quality protein with almost no fat and is packed with heart healthy omega 3’s. This inexpensive pantry item is great for not only sandwiches but also salads and pasta salads. With that said, it stores excellent in the fridge and is a great lunch idea to pack if you are in need of on-the-go meal ideas.

Tuna is a must have in my student house and this sandwich is a personal favourite!

Ingredients

  • 1 can Tuna
  • 1 tbsp Chives, diced
  • 1 Dill pickle, sliced
  • 1 tbsp Red onion
  • 2 tbsp Mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp Apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp Butter
  • 1/3 cup Shredded cheese
  • 1 Leaf of lettuce
  • 4 Slices of Cucumber

Instructions

  1. Drain 1 can of tuna and empty it into a bowl. Flake it apart using a fork
  2. Dice 1/2 of a chive, 1 celery stick, 1 medium size pickle and 1/4 of a red onion.
  3. Add 2 tbsp of mayo and 1tbsp of apple cider vinegar.
  4. Mix thoroughly together and add pepper if desired.
  5. Use 1 tsp of butter on one side of the slices of bread
  6. Add the tuna salad on the non-buttered side and sprinkle the cheese (to add extra flavour spread mayo on the tops of the bread).
  7. Grill the tuna sandwich for about 3 minutes or until golden.
  8. Add the crisp lettuce and about 4 thinly sliced cucumbers on top.
  9. ENJOY! ?

How long can I store the tuna mixture?

Once you mix the tuna and mayonnaise, you will want to store any extra in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. If you make the sandwich and hope to store it, you might not be able to call this “Tuna Sandwich Crunch”! The bread will pick up moisture over time, and your tuna sandwich is best enjoyed immediately after making it.
