Lesson Two – YouTube Basics

In this lesson, you’ll learn how YouTube works and how to select a title and description of your channel that garners attention. You’ll also learn about how the algorithm works and about how you can apply to be part of the YouTube Partner program.

  1. How YouTube Works
  2. Add a Title and Description – accurate and relevant + keywords
  3. Choose a Thumbnail WISELY!
  4. How the Algorithm works – factors like “watch time” and subscribers (really important)
  5. YouTube Partner program (1000 subscribers & 4000 hours watch time in a year)

Lesson Three – Brand your Channel

In this lesson, you’ll learn about branding for your channel. You’ll select an icon that is best for your channel and a banner. One of our favourite banner making tools is Canva.com. You can create a channel trailer to explain your channel to visitors, create selections and playlists.

  1. Channel Icon
  2. Channel Banner (include publishing schedule if you have one)
  3. Channel Description (in the about tab) and LINKS to Social Media Account
  4. Channel Trailer – displays to unsubscribe viewers (may choose to have a channel trailer)
  5. Playlist – create new playlist & add your videos
  6. Channel Sections – “Customize Channel” – add sections (up to 10 sections in horizontal uploads)

Lesson Four – An Introduction to YouTube Policies and Guidelines

In this lesson, you’ll learn the dos and don’ts of content posting. It’s imperitive to be sensitive to your audience and to be respectful to everyone.

Keep your account in good stading:

  1. No nudity or sexual content
  2. No harmful or dangerous content (age restricted)
  3. No violent or graphic videos (provide description)
  4. No child endangerment
  5. Respect copyright (use copyright center for more detail) – for free audio check out the YouTube Audio Library
  6. No hateful content
  7. No cyberbulling
  8. No private information – think before you share information online
  9. No spam – no misleading information (no scams or scammers)
