Skills You Have & Skills You Need

Objective: To identify the skills that I have and the skills that I need to run my business.

Everyone has skills! You need to think about the various skills listed, and who will possess that skill in your business. In the beginning, when businesses are small, sole-propriotorships, the business owner ends up taking on most of the roles listed. It is important that you identify these skills BEFORE you open your business to ensure there is an understanding of the division of labour and what resources you can tap into to help you if you are the business owner.

You may require skills that are not on this list. That’s okay. Make this list your own by adding or subtracting what you need.

Get creative, and think about hiring a student, a freelancer or a friend you know who has the skills. Join a small community of entrepreneurs where you collaborate and share ideas and resources with others. Many start ups have similar needs, and you will grow your network of resources through this involvement. Be brave!
