Broccoli Stuffing Casserole

Okay, let’s get started! Rinse your fresh broccoli under cool running water and prepare your heavy bottomed saucepan for steaming. Broccoli is such a vibrant colour of green when it’s steamed. Yum! Steam the broccoli until fork tender then remove from heat. You can then arrange it in a greased casserole dish while you work on the rest of the ingredients.

Create a white roux

Make a White Roux

Using the saucepan that the broccoli was steamed in, melt the butter and whisk in flour to create a white roux. You’ll see that the flour doesn’t incorporate well until it is whisked in.

The flour acts to thicken the butter. This flour to liquid ratio will yield a thick sauce for this dish.

Continue whisking as you add the soup base and milk to the pot. Stir frequently as you heat this mixture to avoid burning the sauce.

Simmering nicely… see all of those bubbles around the edge? This will simmer for 4 to 5 minutes – but be careful not to allow it to burn.
Assemble ingredients together

Put the casserole dish aside while you prepare the stuffing according to the package and chop the walnuts for the topping.

Spoon the stuffing mix over the broccoli and sauce, then sprinkle chopped walnuts on top and bake covered as directed in the recipe below.
